About
Sheikh Secondary School was built in 1958 and is considered one of the oldest schools in Somali speaking regions. From inception, it became a prominent centre for academic excellence. For 31 years, from 1958 to 1989, the school enrolled only 50 students annually. After a prolonged closure due to destruction caused by the civil war in 1989, the school reopened in 2003.
The school now offers a balanced curriculum, including both the UK Pearson Edexcel International and the Somaliland National Curriculum. With a favourable student-teacher ratio and a commitment to fostering respect, integrity, and global competitiveness, Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh produces well-rounded community members and shapes the future leaders of Somaliland. Indeed, the aim of the school is to prepare students to become respectful contributors to the communities in which they live. The school counts many prominent Somaliland politicians and other key officials among its graduates.
The school is also the only official Pearson Edexcel examination centre in all of Somaliland. This means students travel from various regions across Somaliland and Somalia, including Boroma, Burao, Puntland, and Mogadishu, to sit IGCSE and A-level exams at Pharo Secondary School, Sheikh. This unique status provides students with the opportunity to pursue higher education at universities abroad. On average, over 400 students sit for the IGCES and A-levels in our school. Facilities
Classrooms
Our classrooms are spacious, well-lit, and equipped with neatly arranged desks, tables, and chairs, along with projectors for multimedia presentations, as well as whiteboards and various instructional aids.
Library
Our library is set up as a quiet calm and welcoming study area for students and boasts almost 3,000 books across various genres, including textbooks, fiction and non-fiction books, reference materials, and periodicals
Sports facilities
There are sporting facilities at the school, including an indoor and outdoor gymnasium, a track and field area, and sports fields.
Science laboratories
The school has chemistry, biology and physics labs which are designed to facilitate hands-on learning in subjects like biology, chemistry, and physics.
Computer labs
The school has two computer laboratories equipped with internet-connected desktops that have the necessary software installed, allowing students to learn computer skills, conduct research, and complete assignments.
Dorms and hostels
Our dormitories are spacious and well-maintained, providing a clean and comfortable living environment. There are separate facilities for boys and girls, ensuring privacy and security for all students.
